A starting guard at the University of Georgia from 1958 through 1960, Dye spent three seasons as a linebacker for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League, then served in the Army for two years. After his discharge in 1965, Dye became an assistant to Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama. He took over as head coach at East Carolina University in 1974 and had a 48-18-1 record in 6 seasons there, then guided the University of Wyoming to a 6-5-0 mark in 1980. In 1981, Dye was named head coach and athletic director at Auburn University. He resigned as athletic director after a former player charged that he'd received payments from alumni and assistant coaches.In the wake of the scandal, Auburn was put on probation by the NCAA and Dye resigned his coaching job after the 1992 season. He had a 99-39-4 record at Auburn and was 153-62-5 overall for a .707 winning percentage.
